Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine as an alternative form of medicine has seen tremendous popularity over the past decade because of better understanding of its precise mechanisms of action. Having originated from ancient cultures, it involves the usage of medicinal plant or plant extracts for treating, curing diseases or for general wellbeing.

The upsurge, particularly in Western countries, in its use has its own advantages over small molecule drugs. Herbal medicines are generally considered safe, and low side effects on the body, have no synthetic element(s) to it, and when prescribed by a trained clinician are considered powerful and efficacious. It has fewer complications when used as the dose prescribed and with caution with respect to other ailments of the individual. Multiple active plant extracts are sometimes combined to create synergy: Combining two active elements to produce an effect greater than each of the individual elements. Building synergy can increase the potency of the medicine, and when used in the right measure (as prescribed) it can be used for treating many diseases or general wellbeing.

Being a mild substitute for many everyday minor health issues, instead of stronger small molecule drugs with established adverse drug reactions, the future of herbal medicines produced under organic, right ecosystems with appropriate agronomic practices, is indeed promising, hopefully better for quality-of-life of the patient and certainly exciting, as more R&D efforts are aimed at elucidating their mechanisms of action.
